He Changed His Bipolar Mind

Posted by David B. and Dianne Hansen | August 20, 2008 .

Dave will be the first to tell you how surprised he is to find his emotions more on an even keel. Instead of swinging severely bipolar (up….down), he stays more evenly tempered. His outlook on life is much more positive!

He says it all began when I began changing his diet….that’s what happened in the beginning, but now he takes charge of his own diet. In the beginning I had to teach him through experience which foods were good and which were bad. I would point out to him the effects of sugar, caffeine, processed foods…but mostly sugar. Potlucks and restaurant dining are still tough places to make good food choices, but at least we’re aware of the good and bad.

In the beginning of our relationship, Dave couldn’t even concentrate long enough to read the funnies or anything else. His mind was energetically whirring in 15 different directions at the same time. He couldn’t sleep more than 2 hours a night. Before we met he had fed himself TV dinners and fast food fish sandwiches, peanut butter sandwiches, and candy bars. Everyday he took several thermoses of coffee and cans of soda to work.

We were in our mid-fifties when we met, so he had been eating those things for decades. Dave is exceptionally strong…he works in the woods, using handtools and chainsaws. Nowadays he also uses heavy equipment, but as a rule, he hauls trees to burn piles and rocks to landscaping areas…by hand.

This man is not only strong physically, but he’s a mental giant! Super hero material. Bipolar.

By the time we met, his body was winding down noticeably. He says he was ready for the rest home because of all his pains and shortcomings. His flesh was soft and slippy, like a spawning fish, rotting away. He took up the challenge 4 1/2 years ago to amend his diet and learn a new way of living… and he has changed his bipolar mind by what he’s chosen to put into his bipolar body. He’s changed what his body is made of…
